Ryedale and the Surrounding Area
Situated in the heart of Ryedale, a spectacular part of North Yorkshire, with the county market towns of Pickering, Malton, Helmsley and Kirbymoorside, each with a wealth of historic background. To the east of Pickering is the picture postcard village of Thornton-Le-Dale. To the North of Pickering the Dalby Forest has superb nature trails, winding east through to Hackness and thereon to Scarborough.
There are three major coastal towns, Whitby to the North, over the North Yorks Moors National Park, Scarborough and Filey to the East with many lovely seaside villages in between – Cayton Bay, Reighton Gap. Also along the North Yorkshire coastline are the beautiful Runswick and Robin Hoods bay, just to mention a few.
There are various attractions in Ryedale – Eden POW Camp restored as a 2nd World War Nostaglia 7 miles from Pickering near Malton. Flamingo Land with its zoo and theme park – and a good day out for the family. Castle Howard one of the Britain’s finest stately homes with its lakes and gardens is only 12 miles away. Concerts are held there on a regular basis. Close to Helmsley is the Folk Park village of Hutton Le Hole. Bylands Abbey and Rievaulx Abbey are are interesting religious monuments to a bygone era.
North York Steam Railway is located in the centre of Pickering. A trip across the North York Moors is a must, particularly if you are a steam enthusiast. One mile to the North of Helmsley is Duncombe Park and Gardens, family home of Lord Feversham for centuries.
All towns in the area still have regular weekly street markets, which
are all worth visiting. Pickering is surrounded by Moors and Dales, which
provide something for everyone.
Enjoy!
